Should AD have a role in your strategy for organic waste disposal: Understanding the pro's and cons
IntroductionFew processes have received the attention or have advanced so much over the past decade as anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge. This is unsurprising in the light of the potential of this process to generate renewable energy with its attendant renewable obligations certificate (ROC). The first day will review the microbiology and biochemistry of anaerobic digestion that is essential for a full process understanding. It will examine improvements in the design and performance of anaerobic digestion and consider the wide range of new technologies that are available for pre-treating sludge and thus enhancing gas yields and increasing solids reduction. The second more advanced day on anaerobic digestion assumes that delegates have a basic process understanding and considers more detailed design aspects and reviews the key design strategies and process models. It views the operation of an existing plant from the perspective of optimising methane production and volatile solids destruction, including the use of pre-treatment alternatives. It considers the importance of downstream processing (digestate dewatering and disposal, liquor treatment), the opportunities for nutrient recovery and the uses for the biogas produced. Process optimisation is thus viewed from the perspective of all of the flow streams and not simply biogas production. The main process operating problems are reviewed in detail and strategies for their alleviation and prevention and covered. ProgrammeTo view the course programme please click here. Testimonial"The Government is keen to see a much greater uptake by local authorities, businesses and farmers for anaerobic digestion. Complementary to this, the Waste Strategy for England 2007, sets out the important contribution which anaerobic digestion could make to achieving waste management goals. Anaerobic Digestion can also make a material contribution to delivering the Government's Renewable Energy Strategy. The 2 day training course delivered to Buckinghamshire County Council and District Council representatives by Aqua Enviro has provided the tools to make an informed decision on whether or not AD is a feasible option. It has also highlighted what the opportunities and challenges are from tendering through to design and full scale operation. The course content was extremely well delivered and tailored to meet our requirements. I would recommend this course to other local authorities considering investing in anaerobic digestion." Gurbaksh Badhan Waste Operations & Capital Team Leader, Buckinghamshire County Council
