Design of Activated Sludge Systems

Introduction

A modern activated sludge plant incorporates a number of features to ensure that the mixed liquor settles well in the aeration basin.  These include: selectors, anoxic zones, plug flow mixing and adequate settlement capacity.  In addition the increased costs of energy have mean that proper design of cost effective aeration systems is essential.  This module will review the design of each of the aspects of a modern treatment plant, presenting a theoretical background to aid understanding, and providing the design equations by means of worked examples, that are necessary for effective plant design.  

Programme

• Understanding how bacteria remove BOD, ammonia, nitrate and phosphorus
• The kinetics of BOD, N and P removal and application of kinetics to design
• Reactor configurations to optimise treatment performance, complete mix to plug-flow
• Designing and sizing the individual zones (anaerobic, anoxic and aerobic)
• Ensuring good sludge settleabilty by appropriate selector design 
• Calculating the aeration requirements
• Final sedimentation tank design based on SSVI_3.5
