A quick glance at the programme for this year will show the dominance of anaerobic digestion with around 70% of the presentations embracing one or more aspects of this technology.  It is perhaps unsurprising in view of the predictions for 1,000 new digesters to be constructed by 2020 with an annual spend of around £160 million needed to achieve this.  In our present austere environment many organisations are hoping to benefit from a share of this investment.  Anaerobic digestion has always played an important role in the sludge process flow train at wastewater treatment facilities.  As a result water industry must feel it is well placed to share the knowledge it has gained with this technology and it is important that it does so, in order to prevent it from being oversold and its complexities underestimated.   Codigestion offers one such opportunity and the industry now seeks a better understanding of the full economic cost implications of this route.  With the strong supply chains the industry has in place for the recycling of biosolids to agricultural lands it has many synergies with a waste industry that requires similar routes for digestate re-use.  At the heart of the success of digestion is the beneficial applications of the energy it produces and so fuller understanding is required of the comparative advantages of the many routes for biogas; this is a new area for many who are now grappling with the complexities of the various energy units and the additional regulatory hurdles each route will bring.  Thus biosolids and waste are now big business again.  There are challenges for the industry with new technologies and opportunities to grasp and understand.
