Steep rises in energy costs, changes in legislation and increased pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have led to a much greater focus on anaerobic digestion. Anaerobic digestion is an established technology in the water industry where it is used for the generation of biogas from sewage sludges. However, many new technologies have been developed to enhance gas yields and laboratory trials can be essential to establish the suitability of a process to a given sludge.
There has been much interest in the co-digestion of carbon rich wastes with sewage sludge to enhance gas yields as well as in the opportunities for anaerobic digestion of food and agricultural wastes. Aqua Enviro specialise in assessing the suitability of liquid and solid wastes for anaerobic digestion and we offer a range of tests from simple biodegradability testing (BMP test) through to laboratory and pilot scale trials. We have the capability to trial both conventional and novel anaerobic digestion technologies and we can work closely with clients to develop new pilot plants to meet any process verification requirements.

Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) Testing
This is a simple and rapid test which demonstrates both the suitability of a feedstock for anaerobic digestion and its potential methane yield. It is particularly useful for evaluating the potential for co-digesting mixed wastes, blended to give an optimised carbon to nitrogen ratio.
Anaerobic Digestion Treatability Trials
A more detailed assessment of process performance can be provided by carrying out a laboratory trial using bench scale treatability reactors. These studies can be carried out on a range of sludges and wastes under both mesophilic and thermophilic conditions to determine the optimum operating conditions.
Advanced Pre-Treatment Technologies
Many new technologies have emerged to enhance the hydrolysis and therefore the biogas gas yields from sewage sludges. We have been at the forefront of the industry, carrying out trials of both thermal and enzymic enhanced hydrolysis and a number of full-scale plants are now being built across the UK based upon these studies.
