Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) Testing

ImageThis is a simple and rapid test which demonstrates both the suitability of a feedstock for anaerobic digestion and its potential methane yield.  It is particularly useful for evaluating the potential for co-digesting mixed wastes, blended to give an optimised carbon to nitrogen ratio.

To carry out this procedure a quantity of the waste(s) is blended with anaerobic seed sludge and incubated in a vessel at 35°C.  The increase in gas production compared to a control vessel of seed sludge is used to calculate the methane production as litres CH4/kg VSS.

The duration of the test varies depending on the biodegradability of the waste with many samples show no further gas production after 10 to 30 days.  This can be used to test a wide range of wastes including:

  • Food
  • Brewery / Beverage
  • Tannery / Abattoir
  • Chemical
  • Cellulose / Packaging

Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) samples may also be analysed for the BM100 test, which uses this method to monitor the degradation over a 100 day period in accordance with the Environment Agencies MBT monitoring guidelines.
