A more detailed assessment of process performance can be provided by carrying out a laboratory trial using bench scale treatability reactors. These studies can be carried out on a range of sludges and wastes under both mesophilic and thermophilic conditions to determine the optimum operating conditions.
Anaerobic Digestion trials are typically carried out over 8 – 16 weeks to allow the reactors to acclimatise. A series of reactors can be operated under a range of operating conditions to allow the impact of many variables to be assessed.
The reactors are completely mixed and fed batch-wise with the gas being collected in gas traps. Analysis of the gas and chemical analysis of the reactors provides a detailed assessment of reactor performance. The gas production and solids destruction can then be determined under a range of different solids loadings and hydraulic retention times.
