Biochemical Methane Potential (BMP) analysis of research project reference materialsAqua Enviro have taken part in the 1st intra-laboratory testing for the bio-chemical methane potential (BMP) and the 2nd Intra-laboratory testing scheme for total COD testing of organic samples.  This international research project was organised by CSIC-Instituto de la Grasa, Waste and Wastewater Treatment Group in Spain. 

The laboratories that applied to be involved in the testing were sent pre-prepared samples for analysis along with the details of the results and operating parameters to be supplied.  The precise methodology was to be set by the participating laboratories.  The results from the European wide tests will be compiled to determine whether the subtle variations in the BMP methods adopted by different laboratories affects the results that are being obtained.  

The COD testing was carried out to determine the reproducibility of results from different test methods on the same samples and to test the COD of a new control substance.  The findings from the project are due to be published later in the year and this should help to refine the test methods adopted for assessing organic waste samples.  This study is of particular interest with regards to assessing feedstocks for anaerobic digestion as the BMP test is often used to give an initial assessment of the biogas yields that can be achieved from different wastes.
