Activated Sludge Microscopy

ImageMicroscopic analysis plays a vital role in understanding and tackling operational problems of biological treatment processes as well as being a valuable tool for plant optimisation.  We most commonly receive activated sludge samples but microscopy can also be used to investigate other treatment technologies and processes, namely;

  • MBR's
  • MBBR's, SAF's and BAFF's
  • Trickling filters and biotowers
  • Anaerobic processes
  • Process waters and pipe fouling

Aqua Enviro receive regular samples from the UK’s water companies as well as from a range of industries including food processing, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and paper manufactering.   The microscopy report describes the flocs, bulk liquid, protozoa and filaments present and this concludes with practical process advice and recommendations to optimise the process.

ImageArranging Analysis

Only around 50ml of sample is required for analysis and we are usually able to offer 24-hour turnaround times on samples.  A full report including photos and practical process advice is issued via e-mail and our process scientists are available to discuss the findings in more detail if required.

Activated Sludge Troubleshooting Chart

ImageWe have produced an “Activated Sludge Troubleshooting Chart” (size A1 laminated chart) showing how microscopy can be used for plant control.  The chart illustrates the most common operating problems, filaments and protozoa.
